Former UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya said that there are no divisions among the party and that all members are with the United National Party.
“There have been many explanations given regarding the current situation among the party, due to the recent incidents, I want to stress that we don’t have different teams nor are we factionalists. We are all committed to the UNP and it is a party owned by all of us,” he said.
Jayasuirya speaking at a press conference held today at the Bodhi Ranasinghe Foundation together with the current Deputy Leader of the party Sajith Premadasa said that contesting an election is a normal occurrence within any political party. “We had to listen to the voice of the people, which is why Sajith Premadasa, Dayasiri Jayasekara and I decided to contest the leadership positions at the election. We contested within the framework and the constitution of the party and we never tried to bring the party into harm or disrepute. We are not terrorists and did not commit any acts of sabotage,” he said.
The former Deputy Leader who unsuccessfully contested incumbent leader Ranil Wickramasinghe went on to point out that the need of the hour is to unite and oppose the current regime. “After the election the normal practice is that all factions unite. However this is not possible due to acts of revenge, animosity and hatred that were a result of the election. Our responsibility now is to speak about the problems people our facing today,” he said. The UNP Gampaha District MP urged all members to unite instead of fighting and taking revenge amongst one another to take on the government.
