Southern DIG Vijeya Amarasinghe said at present many individuals holding senior positions in the public service and the police are not worthy of such responsibilities and it created problems for the people.

He stressed that qualified and sensible persons should be appointed to hold senior positions in the public service to avoid inconvenience to the public.

“In the past one had to go through a long recruitment procedure that included inquiries into the activities of his parents and the grand parents before recruitment to the Police Department," the DIG said addressing a ceremony in Matara.

"
However, it was done away during the North East war. This resulted in the deteriorated state of the police force.  Police should be impartial and uphold their dignity. The duty of the police is to protect the public and to maintain law and order. Everyone in the country is equal before the law and the police should not succumb to the interferences and mete out injustices," he added.
