One arrested in Lanka e News attack

One suspect has been arrested by the police in connection with the attack on LankaeNews office in Malabe on Monday morning and the police is looking for another suspect, Nugegoda Division SSP Deshabandu Tennakoon said.

“He is from Wellampitiya and a member of a gang that conducts criminal activities by taking contracts. The other suspect who is from the same area had managed to flee the area following the arrest of his compatriot”, he said.

The incident took place at 1.30am on Monday when. According to an employee of LankaeNews no one has witnessed the arsonists entering the premises.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya has appointed a team led by a DIG to probe the fire and investigate the matter. He also said that a complaint had been lodged at the Thalangama police station.

Earlier President Mahinda Rajapaksa instructed IGP Balasuriya to conduct an urgent inquiry into the attack on the Lanka E-News office in Malabe. The Thalangama police are investigating into the incident under the directions of Greater Colombo DIG Daya Samaraweera. (Supun Dias)
