The panel appointed by UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon to advise him on matters relating to Sri Lanka will meet the UN Chief this week and formally begin work, the UN said.

A UN spokesperson said that the panel members and support staff have been conducting intensive preparatory work over the past few weeks and will meet with the Secretary-General this week, marking the formal commencement of its activities.

The panel has a four month time frame during which it will complete its study on Sri Lanka including the progress on a joint statement between the UN Chief and President Mahinda Rajapaksa signed last year.

Meanwhile asked to comment on the 18th Amendment to the constitution the UN noted that it was an “internal matter” of Sri Lanka and so will not comment on it. (Daily Mirror online)
