The Parliamentary Council (PC) that replaced the former Constitutional Council under the recently approved 18th amendment to the Constitution will be in place by 1st January and as a result all the independent commissions will be activated by the first week of January, the government said today.
Cabinet spokesman, Information and Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said members to all seven independent commissions will be duly appointed by the PC in January and officials will be able lodge their complaints and air their grievances after a lapse of several years.
“The gazette notification, legally establishing the PC will be issued shortly. With the nomination of two members by the Prime Minister and the opposition leader the five member PC will be activated by January 2011,” Minister Rambukwella said.
