The price of essential goods and vegetables have reduced owing to an increase in crop cultivation and increased availability of goods, the Ministry of Cooperative and Internal Trade said today.

The price of essential goods such as rice, sugar, green gram, locally produced red onions, dried chillies and eggs have reduced in comparison to prices in the past few months, Ministry officials said.

They said that the prices of a large number of vegetables produced in the low country have reduced by 89% and the prices of vegetables produced in the up country have reduced by 60%. “Consumers and local producers should benefit greatly from the reduced prices,” Minister Johnston Fernando.

The Minister said that the prevailing weather conditions also accounted for the increase in crops which has led to a decrease in the price of vegetables. The Minister said that vegetables sold at reduced prices can also be purchased at co operatives. He said that the ministry will also take steps to ensure that availability of essential goods as their prices decline. (Daily Mirror online)
