The proposed Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to find a political situation for the national issue will take another few weeks to start its business and to decide whether it is to be debated in Parliament, Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Kitulgoda said today.
Mr. Kitulgoda said the proposal to establish the PSC must go to the ‘Order Book’ first and will have to be tabled in Parliament.
”A meeting of party leaders chaired by Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa including the Leader of the House and Opposition Leader will decide on the ‘business of the PSC’ and submit a report to Parliament and also decide whether to debate the proposal in the House,” Mr. Kitulgoda told the Daily Mirror.
However, Mr. Kitulgoda declined to give an exact date on the activation of the PSC and added there was a long process to be followed before that.
The PSC in its Term of Reference stresses that a unique opportunity has arisen for the people of Sri Lanka to unite and work together as one nation towards the economic, social and political development of the nation and its citizens.
Therefore, a Select Committee of Members of Parliament being a committee of the elected representatives of the people is best equipped to determine the nature and scope of steps to be taken. It will enable appointing a Select committee of Parliament to recommend to the House the measures appropriate to the people of Sri Lanka to arrive as a political solution to enhance the unity of the people of Sri Lanka, further empower the people to work as one nation and enable the people to take decisions and engage in actions towards their economic, social and political development.
