Amendments will be introduced shortly to the marriage registration and divorce law of Muslims to meet today’s requirements, Justice Minister Rauf Hakeem said.

During a discussion he had with the Council of Quasi Judges at his ministry, Minister Hakeem said the law pertaining to marriage and divorces among Muslims requires amendments and Quasi Judges who attended to those functions  need to be aware with the Quasi Law in practice in other Muslim countries.

The minister told Quasi Judges that he would discuss the possibility of training Sri Lankan Quasi Judges in other Muslim countries with their envoys based in Colombo.

He instructed ministry officials to take measures to finalise the legal draft of the amendments to the Quasi Law and present it in Parliament as soon as possible.

Minister Hakeem pledged to quasi judges that the ministry would take steps to pay their salary arrears shortly and also to increase the monthly salary.

Minister Hakeem promised to withdraw the decision taken by the Judicial Services Commission to suspend the Identity Cards of Quasi Judges and to appoint a senior assistant secretary to the Justice Ministry in charge of quasi courts.   (By Sandun A. Jayasekera)
