The Department of Meteorology of Sri Lanka said today that a radiation leak at Fukushima nuclear plant will not affect Sri Lanka because of the distance between the two counties and because the winds from Japan usually blow eastwards.

Besides, a spokesperson from the department said the winds in Sri Lanka are created internally through convective clouds. Therefore it was explained that there was no way the radiation leak could affect Sri Lanka.

Japan is racing against time to prevent a potential nuclear disaster after a third reactor at the quake-stricken power plant north of Tokyo went into meltdown on Monday. (Yohan Perera)
