Ending the month-long drought in the central hills, the main hydro power reservoirs have been receiving heavy rains since Saturday.

A Laxapana Power Station official said the long drought had reduced the water level in the Mausakelle and Castlereagh reservoirs by about 50 per cent.

The Meteorological Department said fairly strong winds could be expected in the Central hills in the next 24 hours.

A Met Department official said the South West monsoon and the cyclonic conditions prevalent over the Pacific Ocean could result in strong Southwesterly winds across the Western slopes of the central hills.

He said showers could also be expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and the districts of Galle and Matara districts and may extend to the North Western province as well. (GI and LP)
