The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) today renewed its request for the release all ‘Tamil political prisoners’.

Making a statement in parliament under Standing Orders 23-II, TNA leader R. Sampanthan said as many as 234 Tamil prisoners had been on a hunger strike for six consecutive days and their health condition had deteriorated.

Mr. Sampanthan said the government had pardoned a number of LTTE leaders, upon their readiness to support the ruling party. He said the 234 prisoners, including some disabled were among those who surrendered to the military during the last stages of the war.

He said that while appreciating the government’s rehabilitation programme, which re-integrated some 10,000 people into society, there were hundreds of others still in prison. (KB & YP)
