There has been a mountain of speculation over the legendary left hander’s retirement while he was diplomatically evading a definitive answer but an SLC document proves beyond any doubt that Sangakkara who retired from T20 Internationals in March this year would certainly play no ODIs after the forthcoming World Cup.
“Kumar Sangakkara has requested a Corporate Box at PICS in Kandy for the ODI (SL vs England) on 13th Dec. 2014 which could accommodate 50 persons, since it is going to be his last appearance in his home town,” Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Chief Executive Ashley de Silva had mentioned in a written submission he made to the SLC Executive Committee meeting on December 1.
“We had provided a special enclosure for Mahela too for his last appearance in Test cricket and it is recommended to accede to Sangakkara’s request as well,” de Silva had recommended.
Sangakkara would play another seven ODIs against New Zealand in New Zealand before the World Cup.
Sangakkara who is statistically the best batsman to have ever played for Sri Lanka had conveyed his decision to retire from all forms of the game to national selectors last month, but had been persuaded to hold back his decision.
The former Sri Lanka captain is reported to have changed his mind about Test retirement and might continue for longer while playing three more seasons for Surrey in the English domestic league.(Channaka De Silva)
