Sixth sitting of Missing Persons Comm. in Mannar

The sixth round of public sittings of the commission inquiring into allegations of missing persons would be held in the Mannar District from August 8 to 11, the Presidential Commission to Investigate into Missing Persons (PCIMP) said today.

“The commission will conduct next sittings at the Manthai West Divisional Secretariat on August 8 and 9, at the Mannar Divisional Secretariat on August 10, and at the Madhu Divisional Secretariat on August 11,” it said.

The commission said it was hoping to cover a total of 47 Grama Niladhari divisions in the district during the pubic sittings.

The Commission has so far received 19,284 complaints of the missing average citizens and approximately 5,000 from relatives of missing security forces personnel.

“We have so far inquired into 786 complaints, which are being analysed for further investigations through an independent investigation team,” it said.

The commission held public sittings in Mullaithivu in July and in Batticaloa in June. It had previously conducted public sittings in Kilinochchi and also in Jaffna.  

Chairman of the commission Maxwell Paranagama, earlier said that they would consult the Attorney General’s Department to take necessary legal action against the accused. (LSP)
