Skull cap ok for NIC's

The Department of Registration of Persons which is under the purview of the Defence Ministry said today that they are accepting completed application forms from Muslim males who are either students of Arabic Colleges or Ulamas, for national identity cards (NICs), with their photographs showing them wearing skull caps.

This decision had been taken after a meeting with Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs Director Y. L. M. Navavi, the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama’s (ACJU) which is the Supreme Council of Theologians in Sri Lanka, Registration of Persons Commissioner General Jagath P. Wijeweera said.

He said that Department of Registration of Persons is only accepting photographs wearing skull caps from Arabic College students and Ulamas.

Earlier the Defence Ministry had directed the Department of Registration of Persons to reject application forms from Muslim males for NICs with their photographs showing them wearing skull caps. (Rifthi Ali)
