Sri Lanka installed five nuclear disaster detectors to alert the people on nuclear accidents, the Power and Energy Ministry said today.
It said three more detectors will be also installed soon.
The detectors will provide early warnings during both nuclear emergencies and other environmental disasters that may occur in the region
The ministry said the project was carried out at an estimated cost of some Rs.12 million was a part of an agreement reached among the Atomic Energy Authority, the Disaster management centre and the Sri Lanka Navy.
Authority Chairman Ranith Wijewardena said there were plans to install a detector in Kandy later.
