SL Coast Guard to be independent unit: Navy Chief

The Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) which is currently functioning under one umbrella with the Sri Lanka Navy will in future function as an independent department, Navy Commander Jayanath Colombage revealed.

Addressing the Marine Conservation Conference 2013 at the BMICH recently, the Navy Chief also said, “tThe Coast Guard will be focusing more on preventing maritime pollution, coastal conservation and rescuing of life at sea. And their jurisdiction will be limited to the most critical area of marine conservation that is within the limits of territorial waters. And our Coast Guard is coming out of age with additional platforms, manpower and additional enhancement of their responsibilities.”
