The government is to hold talks with several powerful countries including the United States in order to send local labour as there was a large number of vacancies in those countries, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) said.

SLBFE chairman Amal Senalankadikara said Sri Lankan government officials would meet representatives from the US, Canada, Germany, Australia and Japan in this regard. There are over 150,000 vacancies for nurses in Canada and another 350,000 in the United States, the Bureau said.

Sri Lankan now sends local workers to some twenty countries, mainly to the Middle Eastern countries.
