While claiming that the country has done much more than was expected from the government though the resolution at the Human Rights Session last year, the Ministry of External affairs said it was confident it could convince the international community at the forthcoming HR sessions in Geneva.

 

External Ministry Secretary Karunaratne Amunugama made these remarks in response to the report of an impending US-sponsored resolution on Sri Lanka.
 

He said more than Rs.1200 million was allocated by the government in the November budget for the implementation of the LLRC recommendations and the resolution was clear in specifying that the country should implement the LLRC recommendations.
 

“We are working closely with the presidential secretariat and monitoring the progress. The steering committee headed by Lalith Weerathunge is currently updating the implementation methodologies undertaken by many agencies and we believe that we have done beyond what was required by the resolution,” Mr. Amunugama said.
 

When asked what the impact the current impeachment crisis would have on the country at the Human Rights Council session in March, Mr. Amunugama said there was no reason for any adverse impact.
 

“We have briefed the diplomatic community in Colombo and our missions abroad about the entire process. Therefore I don’t see how this could cause any adverse impact,” he said.( Hafeel Farisz)
