Sri Lanka were 35 for 3 after the first hour of play in the second test match being played at the Pallekele International Stadium.
The pitch, unlike the one in Galle used for the first test, was favourable for batting, but Sri Lanka failed to capitalise showing the cracks of a poor batting line-up with three wickets falling in the first hour.
Trent Copeland bagged two wickets -- that of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Mahela Jayawardena -- and Ryan Harris took the other, of Tharanga Paranavithana.
Kumar Sangakkara (15) and Thilan Samaraweera (10) were at the crease.
