A student of the Ragama Medical College who took poison during an inquiry at the Matara SSP’s office was admitted to Matara General Hospital. The SSP was inquiring into a complaint of the student concerned when the latter took out a small bottle from his pocket and swallowed the poison.
The rival party of the complaint, a schoolgirl and their parents were present during the inquiry. Meanwhile, the student's father said that his son might have taken poison due to the SSP’s threats and hard rebuke.
However the SSP who refuted the allegation said the student concerned took poison after producing several letters including those addressed to his father, the police and the girl concerned. However, Senior DIG Southern Province Kingsly Ekanayake said he initiated a formal inquiry into the incident
