The Deputy Director of Human Resources of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) was today remanded by the Colombo Additional Magistrate for the fraudulent misappropriation of Rs 1,619,899 of public money.
The suspect Humpita Pathirannnahalage Nishantha Kumara, a resident of Makola was arrested by the Police unit of the Presidential Investigation Division consequent to a complaint made by the Deputy Finance Director R.C. Ratnayake of the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.
ASP Ruwan Gunasekera of the unit submitted that the suspect had siphoned off the funds of the TRC and said the offence committed falls under the Public Property Act and objected for releasing the suspect on bail.
The ASP said the investigation had revealed that the suspect who is responsible for providing air passage facilities had brought the tickets for the officers to travel abroad from various ticketing agents and had subsequently repurchased them from two bogus ticketing agents that the suspect was running under the names Travel Partner (Private) Limited and Western Win.
The Police said that Travel Partner (Private) had been registered to the suspects home address and Western Win was registered on a bogus address at Elvitigala Mawatha. Police also said that the suspect had committed the offence in twenty occasions. They said suspect had admitted that he committed the fraud and had agreed to refund the concerned money to the Commission.
Counsel Shantha Herath appearing for the suspect moved to grant bail to the suspect.
