Twice-punished student ends up in hospital

A Grade VII student of a school in Nawalapitya who was punished by his teacher was subsequently caned by the principal, warranting admission to hospital.
The school principal was taken into custody but later released on the intervention of area residents and boy’s mother.
The student was allegedly sent out of class by the teacher as a punishment for a misdemeanour, when the principal who was passing by decided to cane him on the assumption that he was loitering.
The boy who returned home with cane marks on his body was questioned by his mother, who then admitted him to the hospital and lodged a complaint with the Nawalapitiya Police. He was discharged after two days.
The boy’s father, a policeman had died when was shot while serving in the North a while back. (Suranga Rajanayake )
