The bodies of two persons were found by villagers and police last evening in the Navakkulama-Aluthwewa area in Nochchiyagama. They had been hacked to death.

One body was found stuck in the spillway and was discovered by a farmer who immediately informed the police. With the arrival of the police, the other body was also found few metres away in the same canal.

The victims were identified as Nilanka Ratnayake (24) and Nihal Ratnayake (18) who were residents of the Galawewa area in Divulwewa, Nochchiyagama, police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said.

They had left home on December 17 to meet a person in the area who allegedly runs a kasippu hideout and the kasippu dealer had fled the area following the incident.

According to the police the two victims had told their parents that they are going to meet the alleged kasippu dealer to sort out a dispute that involved money. A complaint was lodged by the parents of the two victims with the Nochchiyagama police on Tuesday when they went missing.

The police also found their motorbike, clothes and slippers more than 200 metres away from the locations where their bodies were found.

No suspects have been arrested so far. The sharp weapons used for killing are yet to be recovered. The Nochchiyagama police assisted by several police teams are conducting further investigations into the incident, SP Rohana said. (Supun Dias)
