UNP and JVP in smear campaign: Susil

General Secretary of the UPFA, Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premjayantha today charged that the opposition UNP and the JVP are in a campaign to provide weapons to detractors of Sri Lanka to make allegations against her in the global forums.
“They are using the local government poll campaign to create a non-existent violent situation in the North saying that political parties other than the UPFA cannot do election propaganda in the North,” Minister Premjayantha charges.
One of the most calm and trouble free elections campaign is being carried out in the North and the conducive security situation has created opportunity for all political parties a free hand for their election propaganda, UPFA General Secretary, Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premjayantha said today.
“The election campaign in the north is more peaceful than the south all political there was no incidence of violence reported other than a few minor incidents here and there,” he stressed.
Recollecting the situation prevailed in 2006, when the local government elections were held in Jaffna, Minister Premajayantha said he went to Jaffna by air to hand over nominations of the UPFA candidates.
“From Colombo to Palaly it was by airplane and we were air lifted from Palaly to Jaffna Fort by a chopper. From there to the Jaffna Kachcheri, we went in an armoured car. That was the security situation in those days. But to day you can engage in any political campaign without fear,” Minister Premjayantha said.
He said there has been some intra party revelry at certain places in the south but relatively the election campaign in the south is also trouble free.
