UNP parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera said today Sri Lankans should be thankful to the United States for cancelling the visa of Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary the Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera and banning him from entering the US.
Mr. Samaraweera said the recording of a statement by Ven.Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera was a drama being enacted by the Government because of the pressure applied by Middle Eastern countries.
He said the unruly elements which were behind the Aluthgama and Beruwala violence were still at large even after three weeks of the incident and said the security forces have still been unable to identify the real miscreants.
Mr. Samaraweera told a news conference that it was not enough to repair the damaged houses or replace those destroyed at Aluthgama but the people’s broken hearts should also be mended by conducting an impartial investigation and ensuring that such incidents would not occur in the future.
“The people should be assured that this kind of bloodletting will not happen again. The Government should pay compensation to the affected people without hoodwinking them,” Mr. Samaraweera said.
He said the UNP was going to set up a people’s commission through the Samagi Balawegaya comprising three retired judges to investigate the recent violence that erupted in Aluthgama and other incidents of violence that occurred in the past.
“People can complain to this commission about the injustice caused to them. And we hope to publish the report so that the people will know who were behind the violence,” he said.
