A shooting occurred in the early hours of this morning at the residence of Nilame Tennakoon the Chief Organiser for the UNP in the Southern Province. According to sources the shooting took place between 2.30am and 3.00am. There were no reports of any injuries.
Speaking to Daily Mirror online Tennakoon said, “We were sleeping inside our room and we heard an explosion and gunfire. It lasted for around two minutes,” he said, adding, “Our house is under renovation so anyone can walk into the hall. I put the light and walked out and I saw two men running towards a vehicle and they were carrying something in their hands. They got into the vehicle and sped off.”
When asked as to what he thought the reason behind the shooting was he said that he can’t pin point a definite reason but said that he suspects the reason to be related to the breaking of a stone in the Galkandeniya Temple. “I raised this issue as the leader of the opposition of the Southern Provincial council. A member of the ruling party from Tangalle is involved in this illegal activity and I spoke against it. The construction company wanted to talk to me as soon as i raised the issue and I declined meeting them. This is the only reason I could think of for this shooting,” Tennakoon said.
