The main opposition UNP said that they would boycott tomorrow’s swearing in ceremony of President Mahinda Rajapaksa for his second term as a mark of protest against the government’s extravagant spending in this respect.
UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya told a news conference that the successive leaders starting from late Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake to former President Chandrika Kumaratunga had conducted their swearing in ceremonies in a simple and modest manner.
Mr. Jayasuriya noted that though President Rajapaksa is entitled to have ceremony, it should not be done at the cost of state coffers.
