UNP to decide on Sat

UNP is to decide its mayoral candidate on Saturday by its nomination board on August 20, General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said on Wednesday.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said several names proposals have come up with regard to the Mayoral candidate for the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) and other local bodies.
Names of Former MP Mohamed Maharoof, Western Provincial Council member K. Y. P. Ram and M. J. M. Muzamil are mentioned as the prospective mayoral candidates while the UNP reformists have proposed the names of senior hand Imitiyaz Bakeer Markar as the mayoral candidate.
However Mr. Attanayake said Mr. Bakeetr Markar had not expressed any desire to contest the election.
Meanwhile it is expected that late UNP strongman Gamini Dissanayake’s son Mayatha Dissanayake or Former Mayor of Kandy Harendra Dunuwill be the party’s mayoral candidate for the Kandy Municipal council.
The Nomination Board is headed by party leader Ranil Wickremesighe, while other members are Co-Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa, National Organiser Ravi Karunanayake, Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya and John Amaratunga.
The Election coordination committee is headed by Mr. Jayasuriya, while the other members are Mr. Karunanayake, Mr. Premadasa, Party Chairman Gamini Jayawickrama Perera and Lakshman Kiriella.
