Unusual ants not new breed –MRI

The unusual species of ant found in and around Panadura has been identified as Monomorium Floricola by the Medical Research Institute (MRI), Director Dr. Anil Samaranayake said.
He said the ant tribe has been identified as Solenopsidini and its sub-family as Myrmicinae.
Dr. Samaranayake said this species was not a new breed of ant. They were one centimeter in length and dark brown in appearance.
He said its bite may cause allergic symptoms depending on the person who is bitten and people are advised to consult a doctor if bitten.
