Wildlife officer killed by elephant

A wildlife officer attached to the Lunugamwehera wildlife office was killed by an elephant last night when he tried to chase it away, the Wildlife Department said.

The tragedy had occurred when he went to a village near the Lunugamwehera National Park with another officer to chase away the elephant following information received to the office that an elephant had entered the village.

The department said he had a fire arm with him but the elephant that was hiding in a thicket had attacked and crushed him to death.(Ajithalal Shanthaudaya)
