Will make another Tahrir Square: JVP

JVP which took to the streets to protest against the high cost of living in Colombo today pledged to make Lipton circus another Tahrir Square.

The JVP said it would launch a struggle in order to change the capitalist based economic system of the country. Party leader Somawansa Amarasinghe said that the protest was a beginning of a long struggle.

He said economic hardship is being felt by the people in all quarters in of the island. “It is felt from North to South and From East to the West,” he said. Mr. Amarasinghe said it is such a situation that the government is calling the people to be patient and tighten their belts further. 

He made this point in relation to a recent statement made by Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne that people should be prepared to undergo suffering today for them to enjoy comfortable life styles in the future. He said it is the rulers of the country who should make sacrifices to set an example.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said the time had come for this government to bid adieu and they should be prepared to do so. “We will be compelled to see that the rulers leave office if they try to hang on to power, “he added.

He said the rulers of the nation are very much mistaken if they think that Sri Lanka would never face a situation similar to Egypt and Libya as there is no ruler who had managed to hang on to power whenever the people staged an uprising. (Yohan Perera and Nabeela Hussain)
