The Sri Lankan government’s “Early Childhood Development Project” has received financial assistance from World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA).

IDA has shown its interest to mobilize US $ 50 million to support Early Childhood Development (ECD) in Sri Lanka and an agreement was entered between the Sri Lankan government and IDA in this regard.

These funds will be mobilized through the government budget during the period 2015-2020.

It is estimated that funds would benefit at least 170,000 children and 6,000 ECD centers. The project will mainly support the improvement of ECID facilities, provision of teacher-learning materials, and the training of ECD teachers, teacher assistants, and trainers.

It will also provide some support for activities aimed at improving health and nutritional status of children enrolled in ECD centers.
