Malaysia’s Maju group signed an agreement to transfer technology, experience and expertise related t o public transport infrastructure probono to the Sri Lankan Transport Ministry to create an integrated transportation hub in Colombo.

The documents were exchanged between Maju subsidiary Maju Terminal Management and Services Sdn Bhd (Maju TMAS) Managing Director Roslan Shariff and Transport Ministry Secretary Dhammika Perera yesterday following ministry officials visiting Malaysia to study various modalities to transform the public transportation infrastructure in Sri Lanka. Shariff said t hat Maju TMAS has been operating and managing the integrated transportation hub in Kuala Lumpur, which was also conceptualised, designed and constructed by the Maju group for the Malaysian government.
The success of the hub in Kuala Lumpur had realized the Malaysian government’s objective of easing the traffic congestion in the city centre.
The hub at the outskirts of the city hosts multimodal means of transportation, comprising urban and sub-urban trains, long-distance buses, intra-city buses and taxis.
It is an integral part of the city’s public transportation network, with the state-of-the-art design and facilities being similar to those of a modern airport. The signature services that have been installed include systems for central e-ticketing, an ultra-modern public information facility, a building management system, centralised bus number plate recognition and tracking, monitoring and managing and centralised vehicle emission management. The Maju group has also innovated fast and reliable reservations, ticketing and boarding via smartphones.
An estimated 45,000 passengers go through t he terminal daily, while t he problem of touting has been eliminated.The integrated transportation hub was the brainchild of former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamed and the Maju group is exporting Dr. Mahathir’s vision beyond the shores of Malaysia.
The facilities offered at this terminal have attracted the interest of many countries, including France, Australia, Indonesia, Sudan, Iran, the Philippines and Thailand.The event was witnessed by Dr. Mohamad and Maju Group Executive Chairman Abu Sahid Mohamed.Dr. Mohamad was in Colombo to deliver the keynote address at the Hambantota Conclave Business Seminar.
