Dr. Coomaraswamy to deliver lecture at Jaffna University

The University of Jaffna for the first-time in its history is to host a guest lecture by Central Bank Governor Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy. He will deliver a special lecture entitled ‘Strengthening framework for policy formulation to address the macroeconomic stress, which has undermined progress and prosperity
in Sri Lanka’.


The lecture will be delivered at the Kailasapathy Kalaiyarangam/Auditorium, on November 6, 2019, between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
The welcome address cum introduction of the guest speaker and summary/takeaways cum vote of thanks will be made by the senior students of economics Mythily Rajadurai and Julias Juriga, respectively. 


This is the fifth in a series of guest lectures hosted by the Development Economics (AECC 42013) Class of 2020, at the Economics Department of the University of Jaffna. 


The guest lecture series has two objectives: one is to create opportunities for the students to learn cutting-edge current knowledge (of a specific topic) from renowned development economists or related subject specialists drawn from the Sri Lankan diaspora and other academics based at renowned universities abroad in the English-speaking world; the second is to create opportunities for the students to learn about the practice of the economics profession at premier public institutions such as the Central Bank, National Planning Department and Economic Affairs Division of the Foreign Affairs Ministry and thereby motivate the students to consider choosing the Central Bank, Sri Lanka Planning Service or the Sri Lanka Foreign Service for their employment and professional career.


The guest lectures by eminent personnel, such as Pakeer Mohamed Amza (Additional Secretary, Economic Affairs, Foreign Affairs Ministry and an alumnus of University of Jaffna), Prof. Kamala Visweswaran (Ethnic Studies Department, University of California San Diego), Dr. Ganeshan Wignarajah (Executive Director of Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies, Colombo and Overseas Development Institute, London), Dr. D.B. Subedi (Research Fellow, University of New England, New South Wales, Australia), Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy (Central Bank of Sri Lanka Governor), Dr. Sujeetha Jegajeevan (Deputy Director, Economic Research Department, Central Bank of Sri Lanka and an alumnus of University of Jaffna), Prof. Shantayanan Devarajan (Professor of Practice, Georgetown University, Washington D.C. USA, formerly of the World Bank), Prof. Wiji Arulampalam (Professor of Economics, University of Warwick, UK), Malarmathy Gangatharan (Additional Director General, National Planning Department and an alumnus of University of Jaffna), Prof. Premachandra Athukorala (Professor of Economics, Australian National University, Canberra), Prof. Indra De Soysa (Professor at Norwegian University of Science and Technology), Dr. Janaka Jayawickrama (Associate Professor at University of York, United Kingdom) and Ian Karan (nee Kirupaharan) (entrepreneur, philanthropist and former Senator in Hamburg, Germany), would enrich the learning experiences of the students and academic staff communities and other members of the University of Jaffna, as well as the wider public. 


This series is pitched as a community outreach initiative of the Economics Department fulfilling one of the core functions of a public university and one of the missions of the University of Jaffna.
