The Export Development Board (EDB) has confirmed Sri Lanka’s participation in the 136th Canton Fair, set to take place from October 15 to November 4, 2024, in Guangzhou, China.
The EDB’s decision follows a visit by a delegation of the Canton Fair Operations Department of China to Sri Lanka on August 30, 2024, with the aim of strengthening trade ties between the two countries.
“During the discussion, the EDB assured to give wide publicity to Canton Fair 2024 among the Sri Lankan exporter community for their individual participation and agreed to consider organising a Sri Lanka Pavilion at the 137th Canton Fair in 2025,” the EDB said in a statement.
China is a key trading partner for Sri Lanka, ranking as the 10th export destination, with exports to China reaching US $ 258 million in 2023, while the imports amounted to US $ 3,090 million. The Canton Fair of China, one of the largest international trade exhibitions, will therefore offer a valuable platform for the Sri Lankan exporters to showcase their products and explore business opportunities in the Chinese market. The 136th version of the event is set to open in autumn 2025, at the Canton Fair Complex, Guangzhou, China.
“Realising the existing potential in the Chinese market, a number of trade promotional activities are being organised by the EDB in China, with a view to inviting Chinese importers and investors to explore the business opportunities in Sri Lanka,” the EDB further stated.
