Abans PLC, in partnership with Haier, took steps to generously donate three units of Haier Residential Air Conditioners to the newly established extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) unit at the Teaching Hospital Karapitiya, Galle, recently, as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.
This facility is designed to offer critical lifesaving ECMO services, includes a four-bed intensive care unit (ICU) equipped with two ECMO machines. The dedicated team, led by Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Kapilani Withanaarachchi and Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Tolusha Harischandra, is slated to become of assistance to many patients seeking critical care.
ECMO is the highest level of critical care support available in the world, as of currently. ECMO units support the heart and lung functions in patients who cannot maintain their own heart and lung functions as a life-saving modality.
The National ECMO Centre (NEC) at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle, currently functions as the only ECMO facility for all the 22 million people of the country. Since 2017, the ECMO team located at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital has been saving the lives of newborns, children and adults referred from all over the country, needing critical care.
