Professor Veranja Karunaratne, the Vice Chancellor of SLT Campus, in his capacity as the Chairman of the National Science and Technology Commission, represented the Government of Sri Lanka at a regional consultation meeting of the Global Digital Compact (GDC) organised by the Government of Bangladesh in collaboration with the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Secretariat on June 22-23.
The aim of the consultation meeting was to identify and promote shared objectives and relevant priorities, facilitating a unified voice in digital technologies at the ongoing negotiations of the United Nations in New York. The intergovernmental consultation involved relevant government officials and experts from the Member States of BIMSTEC.
The objectives of the meeting were to foster the exchange of ideas about both the potentials and challenges related to the evolving use of digital technologies in the region and beyond, to establish a collective understanding and shared vision for the region in relation to the GDC formulation process, and to develop actionable inputs and expectations from various stakeholders to be reflected within the GDC during the ongoing negotiation process in New York.
