Sri Lanka’s most high-tech biofertilizer manufacturing facility opened

The latest high-tech manufacturing facility of Lanka Bio Fertilizers (Pvt.) Ltd, located in Millewa, Horana, was recently opened by Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera. 
This modern facility is comprised of 40,000 square feet of production floor area and is capable of manufacturing over one million litres of biofertilizer per annum. 


Lanka Bio Fertilizers (Pvt.) Ltd is the proud manufacturer of Sri Lanka’s own patented Biofilm Biofertilizer, a 100 percent natural, organic-certified, environmentally friendly innovative concept in agriculture, which can replace up to 30 percent of chemical fertiliser usage. Biofilm Biofertilizer technology is a world’s first, which has been developed by scientists at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS), Kandy, after more than 15 years of dedicated research. Lanka Bio Fertilizers (Pvt.) Ltd has been manufacturing Biofilm Biofertilizer under a public-private partnership with the NIFS since the year 2014. 


Addressing the gathering at the opening ceremony, Lanka Bio Fertilizers (Pvt.) Ltd Managing Director Samuditha Kumarasinghe mentioned, “Biofilm Biofertilizer is the most widely used biofertilizer in Sri Lanka, with usage in over 250,000 acres of paddy lands during the Maha 2022/23 season. We have been able to gain wide acceptance from farmers, due to the advanced technology and the quality maintained by us since the initiation of the project nine years ago.”


Kumarasinghe also stated that Biofilm Biofertilizer is recommended for use in paddy cultivation by the Agriculture Department and also has products for tea, vegetables and maize crops. 
Further, Agriculture State Minister Mohan De Silva, Irrigation State Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa, Agriculture Ministry Secretary Gunadasa Samarasinghe, National Fertiliser Secretariat Director Chandana Lokuhewage, NIFS Chairman Prof. Athula Sumathipala, NIFS Director Prof. Saluka Kodituwakku and Biofilm Biofertilizer Inventor Prof. Gamini Seneviratne were also present at the opening ceremony.
