Sri Lanka Tourist Police yesterday said they arrested a 36-year old in connection to the alleged harassment of a tourist in Mirissa, which went viral on social media recently.
A statement said the suspect arrested by the Kotiliwila police on the same day of the incident was released on a personal bail of Rs.200, 000 after being produced before a magistrate.
The suspect was further remanded and ordered to appear before Kotiliwila police station every Sunday between 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon. The statement further said currently there are 11 Tourist Police units across Sri Lanka to ensure the safety of all travellers.
It also said Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) along with the Tourist Police Division has launched a new project to establish 22 new Tourist Police units across popular destinations of which the first unit is set to be opened in Mirissa tourism area on
March 22.
Recently, the Tourist Police also launched a poster campaign across Sri Lanka aiming to create awareness on how to be cautious while travelling.
