The new government has decided to retain both Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe and Finance Ministry Secretary Mahinda Siriwardana in this interim period in order to avert any disruptions in relation to IMF programme in prioritising stability.

Responding to media queries, the Cabinet spokesman and Minster Vijitha Herath yesterday pointed out that these two public officials have been playing vital roles in direct engagement with IMF. He went on to acknowledge that their services are critical in this interim period to maintain stability.

In addition, he shared that the government does not intend to make decision that might result in a collapse as some expected.

“We have assessed how we should act during this interim period. We don’t plan to change everything and disrupt the state machinery. A lot of people expected chaos, however, we attend to these things with clarity and systematically,” he added.
