American multinational transportation company, Uber yesterday announced it will promote Sri Lanka as a tourist destination to its users in India, a top source country for tourism in Sri Lanka.
To roll out the effort, Uber inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Tourism and Lands.
While efforts are underway by Sri Lanka Tourism to hold roadshows in select Indian cities to boost tourism, Uber will promote Sri Lankan tourist spots and food through its platform, offering special promo codes for transport and delivery services for tourists.
Additionally, a contest will be held, co-promoted by Uber, where five winners in India will receive an all-expenses-paid holiday in Sri Lanka for three nights and four days.
According to Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau (SLTPB) Chairman Chalaka Gajabahu, Uber can play a major role in promoting Sri Lanka.”
Uber Mobility Country Manager Sri Lanka Kaushalya Gunaratne noted that as a global platform that people everywhere use every day, and one that has emerged as an essential part of their travel plans, Uber is positioned to be a natural ally to boost tourism.
Tourism is a major contributor to the Sri Lankan economy, accounting for 13 percentof the country’s GDP.
