The High Commission of Canada in Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Prima group organised a Master Class for Sri Lankan culinary and baking students.
Baking under the guidance of Chef Paul Kittisou, a Master Baker at Canada’s Lallemand Yeast Company, the young chefs produced delectable savoury and sweet treats that will be sure to find their way into Sri Lankan bakeries, restaurants and homes in the future. The event was held at the Prima Baking Training Centre in Rajagiriya recently. The event aimed at showcasing Lallemand’s products and complementarity with Sri Lanka’s vibrant baking industry and growing consumer market.
High Commissioner of Canada to Sri Lanka Shelley Whiting attended the Master Class and stated, “I was impressed with the products these talented young chefs produced. This is a perfect example of melding together high-quality Canadian products and companies with Sri Lankan expertise. We are delighted to work with Prima, a longstanding partner in agriculture-related trade between Canada and Sri Lanka and Lallemand, a leading Canadian company specializing in yeast, to bring this invaluable learning opportunity to these young and talented students.”
The Master Class took on a hands-on approach with practical demonstrations on different baking products, baking ingredient interactions and finished product tastings. The objective of the programme was to expose the students of the Prima Baking Training Centre to international baking techniques, food quality and preparation standards, to improve skills and encourage the pairing of high-quality Canadian products with dishes that appeal to the Sri Lankan consumer.
The Prima Baking Training Centre of the Prima group in Sri Lanka offers recognised professional baking courses with the aim of developing the local baking trade and elevating the status of the baking industry.
Lallemand is a privately-held Canadian company specializing in yeast, bacterial and yeast derivative products for a wide range of applications, including baking, oenology, animal nutrition and bio-ingredients.
The programme between Lallemand and the Prima Baking Training Centre is supported by the Trade Commissioner Service (TCS), the Canadian government’s network of trade professionals that promotes Canadian goods and services, facilitates innovation and R&D, as well as builds networks between Sri Lanka and Canada.
