The Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce (WCIC) held its Members’ Day recently at Hotel Ramada.
It was quite an eventful day for the ladies of the chamber as the much-awaited WCIC website was to be relaunched. The theme for this event was ‘Developing entrepreneurial skills as a means of bettering living standards’.
The guest speaker for the occasion was Institute of Charte
red Accountants of Sri Lanka President Arjuna Herath. He gave a very entrancing speech about how the role of a woman has changed significantly compared to how it was in the past. He stated that women have not completely come out of the era and a drastic change is yet to be seen because women tend to prioritize certain social obligations.
He also spoke of how women are leaders of many organisations and institutions for example US Federal Reserve Chairman Janet Yellen, Indra Nooyi Chair and Chief Executive of PepsiCo and many more. He also identified the main hindrances for females to start up and operate their own business are, access to financial resources, inadequate training and access to information, lack of societal support, legal barriers and many more. In order for women to lead businesses and become successful these hindrances must be changed.
The website was officially launched by WCIC Chairperson Rifa Mustapha.
The event was sponsored by Fairway Holdings.
