The International Labour Day that falls today is meant to recognise the contributions of the labourers and working class, the driving force of a country and backbone of a society.
The International Labour Organisation states, “Celebration of the Labour Day has a sense of urgency for renewed commitment to social justice, as we navigate through the complexities of our time, including climate change and the rapid evolution of the workplace due to technological advancements.”
The day urges the labourers to learn about their rights, as they often face exploitation and discrimination, are unprotected and their voices go unheard.
On the Labour Day, while the people are expected to come together to develop the working and living conditions of the workers, it is a day that commemorates the historic struggles and gains made by workers.
Mirror Business captured moments of the day-to-day work life of the labourers in commercial capital Colombo.
