While there are hardly any humans to be seen in Ampara with the islandwide curfew strictly enforced, animals have come out in their numbers to enjoy the sun and rain. Over the past few days, a large number of crocodiles have been seen in the river near the South Eastern University.
Area residents said that crocodiles, some 9, 5 and 4 feet long, have been seen coming out of the river when there is heavy rain. With the streets deserted, area residents claimed that they have spotted some crocodiles attempting to get close to the road.
They also feared that with a large number of cattle roaming the streets and areas near the river, they could become a target for the crocodiles. So far warning signs have also not been placed in the areas where the crocodiles have been spotted.
Meanwhile, herds of elephants have also been seen near the road in parts of Ampara. In one instance, at least 35 elephants were seen close to the main road this evening. Wildlife officers later took steps to chase the elephants away. Pix and text by Farook Sihan
