Soorasamharam celebrated

Soorasamharam, an event  celebrated following the Deepavali festival held at the Sri Sivasubramaniam Temple in Colombo today. Soorasamharam is the final and most important day of the six-day festivities. During Kanda Sashti, devotees observe a six-day fast that starts on the first day or Pirathamai of the Karthikai lunar month and ends on the sixth day, which is known as Soorasamharam. Lord Murugan is said to have defeated Demon Surapadman on the day like this in history and the Soorasamharam festival is held every year to commemorate the triumph of good over evil.
