Police Chief N.K Illangakone handed over Rs.1 million as compensation and educational assistance for the two children of the slain Matara Anti Vice Squad policeman who was killed along with his wife by notorious underworld figure Ketayam Chinthaka in Kamburupitiya on November 16, last year.

Addressing a gathering to mark the event at police headquarters IGP Illangakoon said PC Weligama Liyanarachchige Sunil had to sacrifice his life as he was safeguarding the law and discharging his duties properly.

He took steps from the beginning to curb the drug menace and criminal activities in the area and in his neighborhood.

“PC Sunil was involved in a number of raids carried out against narcotic dealers and kasippu dealers,” he said.

IGP Illangakoon said 3107 policemen had been killed while performing duties which included 2594 who were killed during the war.

 “To protect the future of their kith and kin we wanted to help them and assist them by using funds from the police. We have completed building the house which was half built at the time of his  death,” the IGP noted.

The Police Chief expressed gratitude to President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Minister Wimal Weerawansa for their assistance to complete the house. Minister Bandula Gunawardena also took steps to admit the eldest son to Rahula College, Matara. Certis Lanka also made a donation of Rs.500,000. (Supun Dias)
