"It's one of the lowest points in my career. This one is hard to swallow. Everything went against us today from toss to misreading the wicket. No excuses though. At the end of the day we were not good enough to beat them. They played better cricket," noted Mathews.
Mathews has been under tremendous pressure ever since Sri Lanka conceded their Test series to South Africa early this year. However, cricket board has assured him captaincy till the 2019 World Cup. On Saturday skipper admitted he was under tremendous pressure and admitted he may not lead the side till the 2019 World Cup.
"I still haven't thought about it. I will give it a bit more thought. I need to talk to the selectors,” Mathews said about the future of his captaincy.
Under Mathews Sri Lanka have lost home series against Pakistan, Australia and now Zimbabwe, even though under him Sri Lanka won a Test series in England and also a home series against Australia at home.
Sri Lanka will play Zimbabwe in a Test before India arrives here for a three Tests, five ODIs and a T20.
"We have an India series coming up, but before that, we have the Test against Zimbabwe to talk about. The Indian series will be even tougher. In a small period we have to fix our problems. As a team we did do the training, but nothing is working in the middle."
