The Super Provincial limited over tournament will kick off today with Team Colombo taking on Team Dambulla at the R Premadasa Stadium while Team Kandy will meet Team Galle at R Premadasa Stadium.
The four teams contesting will be led by Dinesh Chandimal (Team Colombo) who are the defending champions. The other captains are — Angelo Mathews (Team Kandy), Upul Tharanga (Team Galle) and Kusal Janith (Team Dambulla).
The four squads comprising of 24 players in each have been selected for the league matches and according to sources some of the players will only be able to play for three matches due to the forthcoming West Indies tour scheduled in June and the squad will be pruned down to 15 players once the tournament is in progress.
Fast bowler Lasith Malinga who has made his intention of making a come back will also be playing and has been included in the Team Dambulla. The matches will be played in three venues at P. Sara Stadium, R. Premadasa Stadium and CCC ground.
Another significant feature in this year’s tournament is that in all four squads, the selectors have named two under 19 players each.
The league matches are scheduled to be played over five days and the final is due to be played on May 20 at R. Premadasa Stadium under floodlights.
