It was near but yet so far for Zimbabwe as an all-around performance by skipper Sikander Raza was in vain as the experienced Angelo Mathews and Dasun Shanaka aided by poor bowling denied the visitors victory. Sri Lanka recorded a thrilling last-ball win in the first of the three T20I encounters played at the R. Premadasa Stadium yesterday.

Sri Lanka faced a challenging run chase of 144 runs, struggling at 83 for 6 in the 14th over. The seventh-wicket pair, Mathews and Shanaka, displayed experience, dismantling Zimbabwe’s bowlers. Mathews, back in T20I’s after three years, played a vital role. Despite his dismissal, Sri Lanka secured a thrilling last-ball victory, with Chameera hitting the winning runs.

Zimbabwe, batting first, saw initial struggles for openers Kamunhukamwe and Ervine.

Spinner Theekshana’s introduction led to a double blow. Skipper Raza’s aggressive halfcentury and partnerships guided Zimbabwe to 143 for 5. Sri Lanka’s innings showcased resilience, securing a thrilling victory in the first T20I. (Pix: Kushan Pathiraja)
